Top 10 Tips to Make You Interesting in Front of Strangers

Who doesn’t want to look smart in front of strangers? Be it an interview or a date, the first impression can make or break the deal. Without confidence or the right strategy, you could end up falling in front of strangers. Here are the top 10 tips to help you get off on the right footing.

Dress up

Clothes maketh the man. Or woman! A well-dressed person instantly makes him or her approachable and influences others. When you are dressed to the occasion, you automatically become more confident and less self-conscious – two key aspects to look smart in front of strangers. Clothes and accessories are not just for comfort or protection. They can be great conversation starters too.

Be creative

To avoid falling in front of strangers, don’t give a boring introduction of your name and job. Instead, try and make it warmer to draw others in and start a conversation. For example: If you are a receptionist you could say “I meet and guide interesting people every day at my company.” Of course, it doesn’t have to be cheesy. You could add something unusual about what you do to your job title to make it more interesting.

Watch your body language

Learning about body language can be interesting tips for in front of strangers  as that can reveal more than words. To look smart in front of strangers, practice better body language. Having a good posture, that is upright, makes you look appealing. Looking people in the eye assures them that you are paying attention. Make sure it does not come off as staring though. Not crossing your arms and legs when you meet someone makes you seem open and engaged. Giving a firm handshake indicates confidence and control.

Tap your inner humor

One of the interesting tips for in front of strangers is to be funny. Humor rubs off on people and instantly establishes a rapport with others. Remember the things that make you laugh. Chances are that the same things make the other person laugh as well and offer a way to make a conversation interesting.

The hilarious reason Matthew McConaughey won’t answer to ‘Matt’

YOU’LL never hear Matthew McConaughey answer to ‘Matt’ or ‘Matty’ — and there’s a very good reason.

He’s too scared of the consequences.

“I answered to Matt one time when I was in kindergarten, when my Mum was my teacher,” the 47-year-old Hollywood star told Nova FM’s Fitzy and Wippa show on Monday morning.

“My buddy goes, ‘Hey Matt! Wanna play on the monkey bars?’ and I said ‘Yeah’ and ran to the monkey bars … and next thing I know I feel a hand on my shoulder pull me back and body slam me to the ground — and it was my mother.”

Turns out, she wasn’t impressed by the friendly nickname.

“She says to me ‘What’s your name?’ and I said ‘Matthew …’ and she goes ‘Why did you answer to Matt?’ and I said, ‘I don’t know, I knew he was talking to me!’ and she said ‘Don’t you ever answer to that again — I named you Matthew on purpose’.”

The severity of her response appears to have scarred the father-of-three for life.

“So if anyone calls me ‘Matt’ I know they either don’t know me well or they’re jacking with me,” McConaughey told the radio hosts, before admitting he’s still scared of his mum.

“She’s 84, but she’s still spry.”

The star, who lends his voice to a koala character in new animation movie Sing, also reminisced about his time living in Australia.

“Two weeks out of high school, I came down there [to Australia] for a full year. I lived in a little town called Warnervale … population 305,” he recalled.

“And I got introduced to five-day cricket matches, where you drink beer, snooze, pass out, then wake up and there’s not another wicket gone.”

Earlier this year, McConaughey opened up to after copping a fair bit of flak over the decision to cast him as an Australian character.

“Australians are not offended that I played a koala bear! Australians don’t get offended by things like that!” he insisted.

“You guys are no-frills. I lived over there for a year, I’ve made three films there, and I know Australians well enough to know they’re not offended … I worked 11 different odd jobs the year I lived in Australia.”

The cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, and Seth MacFarlane, and follows the story of a koala, Buster Moon (McConaughey), an entrepreneur trying to stop his theatre from being shut down.

Sing will be in cinemas on Boxing Day.

Melbourne Airport jet fuel shortage begins to ease, airlines reporting no delays

A shortage of jet fuel at Melbourne Airport has started to ease with supply resuming to some terminals and airlines reporting no delays.

A fuel shortage on Friday sparked concerns of diversions and flight delays following the delivery of a substandard shipment of imported aviation fuel.

The ABC was told that less than 2 million litres of aviation fuel was available at the country’s second busiest airport.

An A380 can require more than 300,000 litres of fuel for a long-haul flight.

ExxonMobil, the representative of the fuel suppliers, said the issue had arisen following disruptions in recent weeks to jet fuel deliveries from a number of terminals across Melbourne.

“While the issue is not yet resolved, supply has started to resume from some of the impacted terminals which may help bolster supply at the airport and soon alleviate the need for customer allocations,” the company said in a statement.

Airlines make contingency plans to avoid delays

Airlines Qantas and Virgin made contingency plans and said so far there had been no delays.

Two Qantas international flights were diverted to Sydney to refuel after airlines were rationed to half of the amount of fuel they would normally use.

Virgin said it was flying as normal and that most domestic flights were arriving in Melbourne with extra fuel on board.

“The fuel supply issues at Melbourne Airport have so far had no impact on Virgin Australia’s operations in or out of Melbourne,” the company said in a statement.

“We do encourage our guests to check the flight status page on the Virgin Australia website for the most up-to-date information.”

Storage capacity ‘needs to be improved’

Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the shortage highlighted the need for Melbourne to match other airports like Sydney, in terms of storage capacity.

“Melbourne Airport is a world-class international airport but for far too long, Melbourne Airport has not had sufficient jet fuel storage to be able to meet the growing needs of the flights that are coming in and out of Melbourne,” she said.

“We cannot continue this level of uncertainty where there is potentially from moment to moment insufficient jet fuel supply because of storage issues at Melbourne Airport.”

A decade ago seven fuel refineries operated in Australia but now there are only two in Victoria and imports from Asia are needed to meet the demand.

Sydney man Roy Tabalbag, who stabbed girlfriend’s lover to death, jailed for six years

A Sydney man who stabbed his girlfriend’s lover to death has been sentenced to six years in jail for manslaughter.

When Roy Tabalbag, 31, walked into his Darling Point unit in November 2013, he found his partner Geecy Rebucas having sex with her colleague, Amin Sthapit.

Mr Sthapit ran into the bathroom and Tabalbag grabbed a knife, forced his way in and started stabbing him.

The attack continued after Mr Sthapit fled to the bedroom.

At a trial last year, Tabalbag was convicted of murder and sentenced to 17 years’ jail.

However, he successfully appealed that conviction earlier this year and at a second trial, a jury found him guilty of manslaughter, accepting he had lost control of his actions.

“It was clearly a huge shock when he opened the door to reveal what was happening inside the apartment,” Acting Justice Jane Mathews said.

“As far as Mr Tabalbag was concerned, they were planning to get married and have children.”

Ms Rebucas and Mr Sthapit had first met at the Golden Sheaf Hotel in Double Bay, where they worked as chefs.

She was also attending a cooking school, which is where she was meant to be on the day Mr Sthapit was killed.

Partner was suspicious

Tabalbag knew she was not at the school, because he had been monitoring the whereabouts of her mobile phone, using an application, since growing suspicious of his partner sometime earlier.

Acting Justice Mathews said the level of violence involved in the attack was “serious and sustained” but added Tabalbag had shown remorse and accepted responsibility for his actions.

Tabalbag had offered to plead guilty to manslaughter but this was rejected by prosecutors.

The judge imposed a total sentence of six years, with a non-parole period of four-and-a-half years.

With time served, Tabalbag will be eligible for parole in May 2018.

Sydney weather: Sydney prepares for an early taste of summer heat

Tim Hornibrook Facebook | Tim Hornibrook Twitter

IT’S the season we’ve all been waiting for — Sydneysiders will be treated to an early splash of summer next week with temperatures expected to soar to a whopping 37 degrees.

But weather forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Sarah Chadwick said while it’s a nice taste of summer, a cool change will quickly follow to remind us it’s not quite summer yet.

“We often see a similar thing happen in spring, where we have bursts of warm and cool changes,” Ms Chadwick said.

Temperatures in Sydney’s CBD have been in the low twenties this week, but they are set to rise from 24 degrees today to 26 degrees on Thursday and 27 degrees on Friday.

On Thursday, Penrith and Richmond will soar to 29 degrees, and Campbelltown to 28 degrees.

By Tuesday next week, temperatures in the west could reach 37 degrees.

Ms Chadwick said the sudden spike in temperature is due to a high pressure system, which is moving in from outback Queensland.

“It looks like we’re expecting to see a change later on Tuesday evening, Wednesday will be a fair bit cooler and we will see temperatures drop,” she said.

She said there is a chance of a storm and showers on Tuesday evening, so Sydneysiders should lap up the sunshine while they can.

On the weekend, temperatures could reach 26 degrees on Saturday and 25 degrees on Sunday.
